Logitech Harmony 900

Logitech Harmony 900The remote controls for our home entertainment systems are like new furniture; welcoming and warm in the start but soon enough they could multiply like crazy and overrun the living room. We tend to spend more time switching between remotes than pushing its buttons, that’s why the Logitech Harmony 900 was made to replace the ever growing pile of remote controls with just one smart, all-controlling device. Doing more than merely duplicating the previous remotes’ controls, this new innovation by Logitech also added some new features.

Set Up Logitech Harmony 900

Upon getting one, I had a problem with the setup, but after that has been solved, the Logitech Harmony 900 did very well. Programming the Logitech Harmony 900 using Mac is pretty simple, summing up to answering a string of basic-English questions.

However, after first plugging it in through USB, my Mac detected it as an Ethernet and suggested opening the Network Preferences, which sounded crazy. As the Logitech Harmony 900 has no documentation which recognizes the process and it only appeared crazy so I thought that it must be defective.

But after calling their tech support, it became clear that this is meant to happen as the Logitech Harmony 900 should be set as another additional Ethernet profile in the Network Preferences. Such modification may mess up the Network Preferences and can be confusing. In the mean time, the company announced that they’re updating the documents to explain the system more thoroughly.

After that early setback, I moved ahead with the following setup. The software asked for the specific model numbers for my TV, audio receiver, game systems, and cable box, then added the commands of these original remotes to the Logitech Harmony 900’s profile. Logitech states that this model has a massive database of over 225,000 devices and we can set the commands manually if we’re looking forward to it, which sounds fair enough to me.

Utility

Aside from simply replacing the other remotes, this Logitech innovation has also connected everything together stylishly. You can set up trouble-free macros for watching TV or DVD, playing video games, any other form of entertainment by knowing it how everything is tied together. For instance, after pressing the “Watch TV” button, the Logitech Harmony 900 turned the TV and AV receiver on, and then prepared both for each correct commands. Also, nearly all the command buttons worked on my connected TiVo, but the volume inputs still direct to the receiver. Such macros gracefully streamline even the most intricate entertainment media setups.

One of the best features of the Logitech Harmony 900 is that it converts between RF (radio frequency) and IR (infrared) inputs. This lets me control my entertainment devices which are in a closed cabinet or in another room. The remote does this by sending a radio frequency command to a little box that’s set near the hardware. The box then render it back into the regular infrared inputs transmitted in my original remote. Sounds like magic right? However, the Logitech Harmony 900 unfortunately, can’t usually control Wii and other Bluetooth devices. Also, to make it work with my Playstation 3, I had to spend $60 for a Harmony Adapter, which can hurt.

Feel

The Logitech Harmony 900 also feels great on hand. Pick the remote controller up, and the motion sensor turns on the backlights. It’s worth noting how easy it makes finding out how to manipulate key commands through touch as the various buttons have different textures. I also liked how it’s clear touchscreen boosts each of the hard button with exclusive commands like the A, B, X, and Y buttons of the Xbox and the “Thumbs Up” of TiVo.

Conclusion

After having an early setback as the device lacked the necessary documentation, the Logitech Harmony 900 Rechargeable Remote with Color Touch Screen eventually won me over. It proficiently replaces each of the old remotes in my home plus extra activity macros and infrared compatibility. Unfortunately, the Radio Frequency mode didn’t deliver anywhere near Logitech’s projected 100-foot range, but there was no problem controlling my media devices in the adjacent room, which was fair enough for me. But if you would like to change the music volume from across your home, the Logitech Harmony 900 may not work.  However, it can be worth the trouble if you live in a place that’s really tech-inspired, or perhaps if you’re willing to shed the cash for the coolness of what the Logitech Harmony 900 can do for your media devices.
